Well I think they look delicious!! It looks like there might have been a bit of camera shake? I think TS likes things very clean looking, and there’s a lot going on in the background there. I also find it helpful to include a white plate or napkin or something so I can get the white balance just right in Photoshop. All in all, though, they look yummy!
You’re not the only one who has had a lot of problems with this. Don’t take this personally, I’m just going to be really picky like TS. The front-most cupcake is your money cupcake. Since there are three, it’s hard to keep all three in focus–you’d be better off taking a great focused picture of your most appealing cupcake, which would be the front most or possibly back left since the back right doesn’t have as even of frosting. In terms of composition, if you still want to do three instead of one, you need to make more of an equilateral triangle with them.

Being a chef I have always had a problem with frosting piped on like that. It reminds me of trips to the dog park if you know what I mean. The muffins look tasty enough, but the frosting detracts from that. I think if you are trying for the minimalist look, just smear some on with a spatula or use a shaped piping tip.

-Sir John: a real chef? I’m honored! And jealous haha. I was waiting for someone to talk about the frosting….this was my way of avoiding going stir crazy during a huge blizzard and piping bags weren’t exactly first on the list of grocery items haha. But I will definitely keep that in mind!
